Why Your CPR Business Does Not Show Up on Maps

For a business where a large share of searches contain a city name or the words near me, the map pack is often worth more than the entire website. Three results get shown. If you are not one of them, the search functionally did not happen for you.

Here is what we would check, in order, if a CPR training company told us they were not showing up.

1. Your primary category is wrong

This is the most common cause and the easiest to fix. The primary category on a Google Business Profile is the single strongest signal for which searches you are even considered for. Training companies routinely pick something that describes their credentials rather than what buyers type: health consultant, educational consultant, training centre, or a generic school category.

Pick the category that matches the words a buyer uses when they need a CPR class. Add the rest as secondary categories. If you change nothing else on this page, change this, and give it a couple of weeks.

2. Your profile is a listing, not a channel

Most CPR profiles have a name, an address, a phone number, and four photos from three years ago. That is a listing. It ranks like one.

  • Add every course you sell as a service, with a description and a price where you can.
  • Upload photos of a real class with real manikins, dated recently. Stock photos of a stethoscope do nothing.
  • Set hours that match when a human answers. A call at 4pm that rings out costs more than a ranking.
  • Fill the description with what you actually teach and who it is for, not adjectives.
  • Turn on messaging only if you will reply within the hour. An ignored message is worse than no messaging.

A complete profile also converts better once it does rank, which is the half of this people forget. Position is worthless if the profile beside you looks more alive.

3. You have no review habit

Review count, rating, and recency all feed local ranking, and they feed the click decision after the ranking. We hold a 4.9 across 300+ Google and Yelp reviews on our own business, and that did not come from a campaign. It came from asking every student on class day, while the card is fresh in their inbox and the experience just happened.

That timing is the whole trick. A student asked three weeks later has forgotten. A student asked as they are packing up, who just got their eCard notification, will do it in the parking lot.

Answer every review, including the bad ones, and write the reply for the person reading it six months from now rather than for the reviewer. A calm, specific response to a complaint sells better than a wall of five stars.

A profile with 40 reviews at 4.9 gets the call over a profile with 6 reviews sitting at the same position.

4. You are searching from the wrong place

Map results are distance-weighted from where the searcher is standing. If you are checking your ranking from your own office, of course you appear. That is not evidence.

Check from the actual neighborhoods your students live in. You will usually find that you rank in a tight radius and vanish a few miles out, which is normal and which is exactly what tells you where your real service area is. If you want to be visible further out, that is a website and city page problem, not a profile problem.

5. Your address situation is fighting you

Google treats a service-area business differently from a storefront. If you teach at client sites and rent rooms, you may be a service-area business, and hiding the address is the correct configuration. If you have a real classroom people come to, hiding it is costing you.

A virtual office or a mailbox address is the version of this that goes badly. Suspensions in this category are common and getting reinstated is slow and painful. Configure it honestly the first time.

And keep the name, address, and phone number identical everywhere they appear: the website footer, the profile, the directories, the invoices. Inconsistency here is a slow leak rather than a hard failure, but it is a leak.

The website still matters, just not for this

The map pack and the organic results below it are two different competitions with overlapping signals. Your profile drives one. Your page structure drives the other. Fix the profile first because it moves faster, then go and build the course pages and city pages that win the organic half.

We wrote up the exact page structure we use for that, and if you would rather have it done, our local SEO service covers the profile rebuild, the review workflow, and the pages, at $500 a month for one location.

Troubleshooting

Questions we get asked

What category should a CPR training business use on Google?
The one that matches the words your buyers type when they need a class, not the one that describes your credentials. Training companies commonly pick consultant or generic school categories and then wonder why they never appear. Set that as the primary category, add the rest as secondary, and give it a couple of weeks.
How many reviews do I need to rank in the map pack?
There is no threshold we can honestly give you, because it depends entirely on what your local competitors have. What we can tell you is what worked for us: ask every student on class day while the eCard notification is fresh, and answer every review you get. That habit produced a 4.9 across 300+ Google and Yelp reviews on our own business.
Should I hide my address if I teach at client sites?
If students do not come to you, yes, configure it as a service-area business and set the areas you serve. If you have a real classroom people attend, show the address. What you should not do is use a virtual office or mailbox address, because suspensions in this category are common and reinstatement is slow.
Why do I show up in my own city but nowhere else?
Map results are weighted by distance from the searcher, so ranking near your own location and fading a few miles out is normal rather than a fault. Extending your reach beyond that radius is a website job: real city pages with genuine class times and directions, not a profile setting.
