Your Address Is Wrong in More Places Than You Think
September 2, 20267 min readCPR West Covina
A student told us they could not find the classroom. We assumed they had gone to the wrong floor. Then it happened again, and we went looking properly.
Our address was missing one character. The building is on North Barranca, and everywhere we had written it, the North was gone. Not wrong, exactly. Just incomplete in a way that map software resolves by guessing, and the guess put people about a mile away, in a different city, near the IKEA.
Where it had spread
Once we searched for it properly, the count was worse than expected. The same wrong string appeared in 79 files on the website, 18 email and calendar automations, and 1,337 booking records going back to the previous December.
The website count is the one that matters for search. Fifteen of those were structured data blocks, the hidden markup that tells Google your business address. Two more were Google Maps embeds, so the map pin on those pages was being drawn from the bad address. The rest was visible copy: the footer, the FAQ, the parking directions on every city page.
None of it looked broken. Every page loaded, every email sent, every calendar invite arrived. That is the whole problem with this class of mistake. There is no error state. The system is working perfectly and confidently telling people the wrong thing.
An uptime check will never catch an address. The page is up. It is just lying.
Why one missing word costs rankings
Local search works partly on consistency. Google is trying to decide whether the business on your website, the one in your Google Business Profile, and the one in a dozen directories are all the same company. Your name, address and phone number are the evidence it uses, and it wants them to match.
When they do not match, nothing dramatic happens. You do not get a warning. You just quietly compete a little worse against the training company down the road whose details agree with each other everywhere. And in local search, where you are ranking against maybe eight serious competitors in your radius, quietly worse is enough to matter.
The structured data is the part most owners never look at. It is invisible on the page, it was copied into every template when the site was built, and it is the version Google reads most literally. Ours was wrong in fifteen places and had been for months.
The part that actually loses money
Rankings are the slow cost. The fast one is the student standing outside the wrong building ten minutes before a class starts, deciding whether to keep driving or give up.
That person does not email you to explain. They arrive late and flustered, or they do not arrive, and you record a no-show. If you are the kind of company that follows up on no-shows, you find out. If you are not, the mistake is invisible and you conclude that people are unreliable.
It also lands in your reviews eventually, and a review that says the location was confusing is unusually hard to answer, because the reviewer is right.

Want your local SEO audited properly?
Structured data, address consistency, city page structure, and the automations most owners forget are publishing their address too.
Book a 15-Minute CallHow to audit yours in an hour
- 01Write down the correct address once, exactly as your Google Business Profile has it. That is the reference. Everything else gets compared to it, and where they disagree, the profile wins.
- 02Search your entire site source for the street number, not the full address. Searching the full string only finds the version you already know about. The number finds every variant.
- 03Check your structured data specifically. Look for streetAddress in the page source. This is the one nobody checks and the one Google reads hardest.
- 04Check any embedded map. The pin is drawn from whatever address is in the embed URL, which is usually pasted once and never revisited.
- 05Check your email templates and calendar invites. This is the step people skip. Your confirmation email, your reminder, and the location field on the calendar invite are all publishing an address, and they are not in your website codebase.
- 06Check your booking records. If your system stores a location on each booking, the wrong one is now stamped on every historical record and will keep printing on rosters.
Step five is where we found the most. The website is the obvious place to look, so it gets looked at. The automations are not part of the site, they are configured in a separate tool, and they had been quietly sending the wrong address in every confirmation and every calendar invite for months.
Then make it impossible to drift again
Fixing 79 files is a bad afternoon. Fixing them a second time, because a new page copied an old one, is worse. The structural answer is that the address should exist in exactly one place in your codebase and everything else should read from it. Ours was typed out in eighteen separate constants, which is why it could be wrong in some places and right in others.
The other half is a check that runs without you. We now have one that loads the pages a customer can actually buy from, every morning, and asserts the correct address is present and the old wrong one is not. It is a small thing and it would have caught this months earlier than a confused student did.
That is the general lesson, and it is worth more than the address itself. Most of what goes wrong in a small training business does not throw an error. It just sits there, working, being wrong. The only defence is checking the finished product from the outside, the way a customer sees it.
