We rank our own local business

Local SEO for Local Service Businesses

We do local SEO for local service businesses the same way we do it for our own: fix what Google cannot read, rebuild the Business Profile, then build one real page per service and per city.

  • 0189-page migration to server-rendered HTML on our own site
  • 024.9 rating from 300+ Google and Yelp reviews

How we rank a local business site

Six steps, in this order. Step 2 is the one most agencies skip, and it invalidates everything after it.

6 steps

  1. Audit what already ranks

We pull your live pages, positions, and the queries you already win.

  2. Fix the crawl problems

Google has to read the page before it can rank it.

  3. Rebuild the Business Profile

Categories, services, photos, hours, and a review habit.

  4. Write one page per service

Each service you sell gets its own page, written for its buyer.

  5. Add city pages that differ

Real coverage areas, real jobs, no copy-paste templates.

  6. Link them on purpose

Service pages feed city pages so they stop fighting each other.

Common assembly error

One page trying to rank for eight services

Without it

Most local business sites have the same shape. One homepage that tries to rank for every service in every city, a contact page, and maybe a blog post from 2019. Google gets one page and eight different intents, so it ranks that page weakly for all of them and strongly for none.

The second pattern is worse and harder to see. The site is built as a JavaScript shell, so what Google fetches is an empty container and the words arrive later, if at all. The owner sees a beautiful site in the browser. Google sees almost nothing. We had this exact problem on our own site, which is why we moved 89 pages to server-rendered HTML.

The third is that the Google Business Profile is treated as a listing instead of a channel. Wrong primary category, no service list, four photos from three years ago, and reviews nobody answers. For a business where half the searches include a city name or the words near me, that profile is often worth more than the website.

How do I do local SEO for a service business?

Start with the map pack, because that is where the clicks are for anything with a city or near me attached. Set the primary category to the thing buyers actually type, not a vague umbrella term. Fill the service list with the actual services you sell and price them where you can. Post real job photos, not stock. Then build the review habit: ask every happy customer while the work is fresh, and answer every review you get. Only after that does the website work matter, and there it is one page per service, one page per city, written differently. We run this on our own business and it holds a 4.9 rating across 300+ Google and Yelp reviews.

Why is my local business website not ranking on Google?

Four causes cover almost every case we look at. One, Google cannot read the page, because the site renders its text in the browser instead of the HTML. Two, one page is targeting eight services, so nothing is specific enough to win. Three, the city pages are the same paragraph with the city name swapped, which Google treats as thin and ignores. Four, the Business Profile is in the wrong category, so the map pack never considers you. Rankings are the symptom. Check crawlability first, because everything else is wasted work if the crawler is looking at an empty div.

Should I build city pages, and how many?

Build them for cities where you actually work or where customers realistically call you from, and stop there. Twelve real pages beat sixty templated ones. A real page names the services that run in that city, gives arrival windows or drive times from your base, mentions the neighborhoods, businesses, or property types you actually serve there, and answers the question a person in that city has. If you cannot write two paragraphs that only make sense for that city, do not make the page. Thin city pages do not just fail to rank, they drag down the pages that would have.

How do I set up a Google Business Profile for a local service business?

Primary category is the field that matters most, and most owners get it wrong. Pick the one that matches what buyers type. Add every service with a description and a price where you can. Set hours that match when a human answers, because a call at 4pm that rings out costs more than a bad ranking. Upload photos of real jobs and real people, dated recently. Turn on messaging only if you will reply within the hour. Then ask for reviews at the moment the customer is happiest and answer every one, including the bad ones, in a way a future customer would find reassuring.

How long does local SEO take for a service business?

The Business Profile can move in weeks, sometimes days, because category and service fixes are immediate signals. Website rankings for service and city terms usually take two to four months to settle, longer if the site has to be migrated first. Anyone quoting faster is either counting brand searches you already had or selling you a report. The honest framing is that ads buy you customers this month and SEO buys you the cost per customer you want two years from now. Run both, and measure SEO by booked jobs, not by a position tracker.

Troubleshooting

Local SEO questions, answered

What makes you different from a general SEO agency?
We rank our own local service business, a CPR training company. Every recommendation here was tested on a site we own, with revenue attached, before it was sold to anyone. A generalist agency learns your trade on your retainer. We already know that the map pack is won on categories, reviews, and real pages, because we won ours that way.
Do you need access to my website to start?
Not to run the initial look. Public pages and your Business Profile tell us most of what is broken. To implement, we need CMS access, Google Search Console, and Google Business Profile access. Read-only is fine for the audit stage.
Will you write the content or do I have to?
We write it. You review it for accuracy on services, pricing, and coverage area, because those are things only you know. Nothing publishes without your sign-off.
Can SEO and Google Ads run at the same time?
Yes, and they should. Search terms from the ad account are the cheapest keyword research available, because you can see which queries actually produced a booked job rather than guessing from a volume tool. We feed that data straight into which pages get built first.
What if my site needs to be rebuilt first?
Then we say so before you sign anything. A JavaScript shell site cannot be fixed with content. We migrated 89 pages of our own site to server-rendered HTML with full redirect mapping and kept the rankings. Same process is available for yours.
Do you guarantee first page rankings?
No, and neither can anyone else honestly. What we commit to is the work: crawlability, profile, pages, links, and reviews, with a monthly report showing positions and booked jobs. If the bookings do not move, we would rather you fire us than renew on a report.
How do reviews affect local rankings?
Heavily in the map pack, where review count, rating, and recency all feed local ranking. They also affect conversion after the ranking, which is the part people forget. A profile with 40 reviews and a 4.9 gets the call over a profile with 6 reviews at the same position.
How much does local SEO cost?
Local SEO starts at $500 a month and covers one location, your Google Business Profile, and monthly reporting. What you pay above that depends on how much of the site has to be rebuilt rather than written. You get a real quote after a 15-minute call.
