Where can I get CPR instructor training in Los Angeles?

Individuals train at our West Covina Training Center, not in LA itself: the AHA BLS Instructor Course runs every Saturday from 12:00 to 4:00 PM at 100 N. Barranca St. A Los Angeles employer or school with at least five candidates can skip the drive and have the course taught on its own site.

How far is the instructor course from downtown LA?

21.7 miles east on the I-10, about 24 minutes when traffic cooperates. From Boyle Heights or East LA it is shorter. Because the class is on Saturday at noon, most people coming from the city miss the weekday rush entirely.

Can an LA hospital or fire station train its own instructors onsite?

Yes. Gather five or more people who each hold an unexpired AHA BLS Provider card, and we teach the instructor course in your conference room, station or skills lab. After their monitored class they are aligned under our Training Center and can certify coworkers in house.

Who does a Los Angeles CPR instructor teach?

Start on the east side. Los Angeles General Medical Center in Boyle Heights is a 600-bed public teaching hospital and Level I trauma center, White Memorial down the street is a 353-bed teaching hospital, and East Los Angeles College trains EMT and fire technology students. All of them run on BLS cards that renew every two years.

Is AHA or Red Cross better for teaching in Los Angeles?

It depends on your students. Hospitals, EMT programs and nursing schools usually ask for the American Heart Association BLS card, so AHA is the one to teach that crowd. Red Cross instructor training suits workplace and community First Aid, CPR and AED classes, and we cover that on a separate page.

How do I become a CPR instructor in California?

The steps are the same statewide. Hold a current AHA BLS Provider card, finish AHA Instructor Essentials online, take the BLS Instructor Course with one of our instructor trainers, then teach one monitored class. Your instructor card is then issued through our Training Center, and from there you schedule your own classes.

Los Angeles specifics

Who needs BLS instructor certification in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has some of the largest hospitals, fire services and school systems in the country. Nurses, EMTs, firefighters and coaches in them carry CPR or BLS cards that come due every two years, and those are the people an LA instructor ends up teaching.

  • Nurses, residents and techs at Los Angeles General Medical Center (formerly LAC+USC), a 600-bed public teaching hospital in Boyle Heights
  • Clinical teams at Adventist Health White Memorial, a 353-bed teaching hospital on Cesar Chavez Ave
  • EMT and fire technology students at East Los Angeles College on Avenida Cesar Chavez
  • Firefighters, cadets and applicants across the LAFD's 106 neighborhood fire stations
  • Coaches, nurses and staff in LAUSD, the largest public school system in California

There is no Los Angeles classroom. Our only public classroom is the West Covina Training Center at 100 N. Barranca St, 21.7 miles from downtown on the 10. If five or more of your people want to teach, the instructor course comes to your LA location instead.
