How to Become a CPR Instructor in California

October 20, 20268 min readCPR West Covina

We run CPR West Covina, an American Heart Association Training Site, and we run instructor courses at our West Covina Training Center. The question we hear most on the phone is some version of: how do I become a CPR instructor, and how long will it take? This is the full answer, in the order it actually happens.

Most people who ask mean a BLS instructor. BLS is the card hospitals, clinics, dental offices and nursing programs ask for, so this guide follows the AHA BLS instructor path, then covers the Red Cross route at the end.

CPR instructor certification requirements

The list is shorter than most people expect. For the AHA BLS instructor path you need three things before you start.

  • A current AHA BLS Provider card. This is the one hard prerequisite. If yours has lapsed, take a BLS Provider class first. We teach those in West Covina too.
  • To be at least 18. The AHA's current minimum age for instructors is 18.
  • A Training Center that accepts you. The AHA requires candidates to be accepted by a Training Center before they enroll in Instructor Essentials. When you book with us, that is our Training Center.

You do not need to be a nurse, a paramedic or a teacher. Many of the instructors we train work in healthcare, but plenty are safety leads, coaches and people who want to teach on weekends.

How to become a BLS instructor, step by step

  1. 01Hold a current AHA BLS Provider card.
  2. 02Complete AHA Instructor Essentials online. It is the classroom theory of teaching an AHA course, done at your own pace, and you bring the completion certificate to class.
  3. 03Take the BLS Instructor Course in person. Ours runs Saturdays from 12:00 to 4:00 PM at our West Covina Training Center.
  4. 04Teach one monitored class while a Training Center faculty member observes. Once it is signed off, you are aligned with our Training Center and your instructor card is issued through it.

Alignment is the step people skip over when they research this, and it matters most. The AHA requires every instructor to align with a Training Center, which keeps the course records, processes the rosters and issues the eCards your students receive. Until you are aligned, you cannot teach anything except your monitored class.

How long does it take to become a CPR instructor?

The in-person part is short. Our BLS Instructor Course is one Saturday afternoon, four hours, and you need to book at least 72 hours ahead.

The two parts that set your real timeline are the online Instructor Essentials, which moves as fast as you do, and your monitored class. The AHA requires you to be monitored teaching within six months of finishing the classroom session, and a Training Center can ask for more than one monitoring. We schedule yours with you, so the honest answer is: as fast as you finish the online portion and pick a monitoring date.

How much does it cost to become a CPR instructor?

Our AHA BLS Instructor Course is $600 with materials included. We call that package Certify: the course, your AHA instructor card and alignment with our Training Center. AHA Instructor Essentials, the online part you finish first, is bought separately from the AHA.

Some people want to teach under us on weekends. Others want their own CPR business. For the second group there are two more packages, both listed on our become an instructor page.

  • Launch, $2,800: the instructor course plus a branded website, an online booking calendar, starter equipment, LLC setup and 12 months of monthly 1-on-1 mentorship.
  • Scale, $5,000: everything in Launch plus the operations software we run our own company on.

Training a group, such as a hospital unit, a fire station or a school district? We also run the instructor course onsite at your location for 5 or more candidates.

Can you get CPR instructor certification online?

Partly. The AHA's BLS Instructor Essentials is blended: the online portion comes first, then an in-person classroom session with instruction, practice and an exam. Your monitored class is a real class with real students. That in-person part is the point. You are being certified to coach hands-on skills, so you have to show you can do it in a room.

If you see a fully online CPR instructor certification advertised, ask which organization issues it and whether the employers your students work for accept it.

Do you need a state license to teach CPR in California?

For AHA courses, your instructor credential comes from the AHA, through the Training Center you align with. That card is what employers and schools check.

One California-specific wrinkle: the pediatric first aid and CPR training that licensed child care providers need runs through training programs approved by the state EMS Authority. If teaching child care staff is your goal, check the EMSA rules before you pick a path.

How long is CPR instructor certification good for?

An AHA instructor card is valid for two years. A Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED instructor certificate is also valid for two years. In both cases, renewing depends on what you do during those two years, not on retaking the course.

BLS instructor certification renewal

Since July 1, 2025, AHA BLS instructors renew on a credit system. Within each two-year cycle you need:

  • 4 teaching credits. Each instructor-led BLS or Heartsaver course is 1 credit, and each day running HeartCode BLS or Heartsaver hands-on sessions is 1 credit. Up to 2 credits can come from the AHA's facilitated community courses.
  • One monitored class before your card expires. The monitoring you did as a new instructor does not count toward renewal.
  • Any required AHA updates completed in the cycle.
  • A current BLS Provider card of your own.

Your Training Center completes the renewal. As yours, we track your dates and tell you what is left well before your card comes up, so nobody finds out the week it expires.

AHA vs Red Cross CPR instructor: which one?

Decide by who you want to teach. In our experience, hospitals, clinics and clinical programs in Southern California ask for AHA BLS by name, so an AHA BLS instructor card fits a healthcare audience.

Workplaces, schools and community groups often ask for Red Cross. The Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED instructor course has a lower minimum age, 16 by the last day of the course, and requires a current Adult CPR/AED certification. Like the AHA course, it pairs an online portion with an in-person session.

We teach both, and we run Red Cross instructor training in West Covina too, so you can pick the card that fits your students, or hold both.

CPR instructor training near me in the San Gabriel Valley

Our Training Center is at 100 N. Barranca St, Suite #255-B, West Covina, CA 91791, just off the 10. Instructors train with us from Covina, Pomona, El Monte, Baldwin Park, Diamond Bar, Walnut and Glendora.

If you are searching for CPR instructor certification near Pomona, El Monte, Covina, Diamond Bar, Pasadena, Whittier or Los Angeles, each of those cities has its own page with the details for coming from there. The course, the price and the Saturday schedule are the same for everyone.

After the card: teaching on your own

Once you are aligned, you schedule and teach your own classes and we handle the Training Center side. Some instructors stop there and teach a few Saturdays a month. Others want a company with its own name, calendar and students, which is what Launch and Scale exist for.

If that is you, read our guide on how to start a CPR training business before you spend anything. It covers the space, the equipment bill and the paperwork, in the order we would do it again.
