Dog coughing and gagging: causes and what to do

A cough or gag can come from kennel cough, a weak windpipe, throat or heart disease, or something stuck. If your dog still breathes easily, has pink gums and acts like itself, call your vet today. Blue or pale gums, hard breathing or collapse mean go to a vet now.

  • Easy breathing and pink gums: keep calm and call your vet today.
  • Blue or pale gums, hard breathing or collapse: go now.
  • Use a harness, keep your dog from other dogs, skip cough medicine.

What should I do if my dog is coughing or gagging?

  1. Check the breathing and gums

Easy breaths and pink gums: stay calm and call your vet today.

  2. Know the emergency signs

Blue or pale gums, hard breathing or collapse: go to the vet now.

  3. Silent or squeaky efforts

That points to choking. Follow our dog choking guide.

  4. Keep your dog calm and cool

Excitement and heat can make some coughs worse.

  5. Swap the collar for a harness

Pressure on the windpipe can set off coughing.

  6. Keep it away from other dogs

Some coughs spread, even before signs show.

  7. Call your vet and call ahead

Tell the clinic about the cough before you arrive.

Skip human cough medicine unless your vet says to use it. Merck notes that masking a cough can worsen the fluid in the lungs in heart failure. Some cough syrups may also contain xylitol, which poisons dogs, the FDA warns. If your dog already had cough syrup, check the label for xylitol and call your vet or a poison line right away.

A cough that ends in a gag is not always an emergency, but it is worth a call. Our dog choking guide sets silent, struggling breaths apart from noisy coughing, and the PetAid app keeps those steps on your phone.

What can make a dog cough and gag?

Possible causeWhat it often looks likeWhat to do
Kennel cough (infectious respiratory disease)Coughing, sometimes harsh and dry and followed by a gag or retch, plus sneezing and a runny nose or eyesCall your vet when the cough starts. VCA says most cases clear in about 7 to 10 days with supportive care. Go sooner for hard breathing, weakness or fever.
Collapsing tracheaA persistent, dry, harsh cough, sometimes described as a "goose honk", that may worsen with excitement, heat, eating or drinking, or collar pressure. Often seen in small breeds.See a vet for a diagnosis. VCA suggests a harness, a calm routine and a healthy weight.
Laryngeal paralysisNoisy breathing, gagging or coughing around eating or drinking, a changed bark. The acquired form is usually seen in middle-aged or older dogs.See a vet. A sudden attack can bring blue gums and collapse, which is an emergency.
Heart failureCoughing, faster or harder breathing, tiring on exercise, and sometimes faintingSee a vet promptly. Hard breathing or fainting means go now. Do not give cough medicine unless your vet says to.

Is it kennel cough?

Kennel cough is the name for a group of contagious airway infections, also called canine infectious respiratory disease complex. VCA says dogs can pass it on before they show any signs. There is no evidence that it spreads to people.

Along with coughing, a dog may sneeze, have a runny nose or eyes, eat less or seem tired. Fast or hard breathing, weakness or a fever are signs to go sooner. A vaccine squirted into the nose protects against 3 of the agents involved, VCA says: Bordetella, parainfluenza and adenovirus. Ask your vet whether your dog is due.

Why does my dog cough at night or after eating and drinking?

Some airway problems get worse in particular moments. VCA says a collapsing trachea can cause a persistent, dry, harsh cough that may worsen at night, with excitement, in hot or humid weather, right after eating or drinking, or when a collar presses on the windpipe. It often affects Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, toy poodles and Yorkshire terriers, though any dog can have it.

Gagging or coughing around meals can also come from laryngeal paralysis, where the voice box cannot open fully. VCA lists noisy breathing and a changed bark as other clues. Heart failure can cause a cough too, and Merck says dogs with it often breathe faster than healthy dogs. Ask your vet how to count your dog's breaths while it sleeps, so you can spot a change early.

Get to the vet now if

Your dog has blue or pale gums, struggles to breathe or breathes fast and hard, is very weak, collapses or faints, or the cough is getting worse fast. If the efforts are silent or squeaky, start the choking steps first. Phone the clinic on the way, and go to the nearest open vet or emergency hospital.

Should I take my dog to the vet for a cough?

Yes, call when the cough starts. VCA advises booking an exam for a dog with these signs, and says to go sooner for trouble breathing, weakness or fever. If your vet has said to watch it at home, go back if it is not better within 2 weeks. These causes look so alike that a vet has to sort them out. Tell the clinic about the cough before you arrive, so staff can keep your dog away from other patients.

A short phone video of the cough can help, and so can a note of when it happens: at night, after drinking, on a walk or after play.

What will the vet do for a dog that coughs and gags?

A vet examines your dog and may take chest X-rays. To confirm some causes, such as a collapsing trachea or laryngeal paralysis, the throat and windpipe may need a look with a scope. Treatment depends on the cause: rest and supportive care for kennel cough, weight and harness changes for a weak trachea, and medicines or surgery for heart or throat disease.

How can I help prevent a dog cough?

Keep respiratory vaccines up to date, as VCA advises, and keep your dog away from other dogs if a cough starts, until your vet says it is safe. For a dog with a weak windpipe, VCA also recommends a harness instead of a collar, a healthy weight and avoiding irritants such as tobacco smoke.

Questions people ask

Can I catch kennel cough from my dog?

VCA says there is no evidence that it spreads to people. It does spread between dogs, so keep a coughing dog away from others.

Why does my dog honk when it coughs?

VCA says a collapsing trachea sometimes causes a "goose honk" cough. Other airway problems can sound alike, so a vet exam is the way to know.

Can I give my dog cough syrup or honey?

Ask your vet first. Merck notes that masking a cough can worsen the fluid in the lungs in heart failure, and the FDA lists cough syrup among products that may contain xylitol, which is dangerous for dogs. Our toxic foods guide covers xylitol.

Can my coughing dog go to the dog park?

Not until your vet says so. Some coughs are contagious, and a dog can spread them before any signs show.
